Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about learning to drive

How many lessons will I need before my test?
The average learner needs 40-50 hours of professional instruction plus additional private practice. However, this varies greatly depending on individual ability, previous experience, and how quickly you pick up new skills. We'll assess your progress regularly and give you an honest opinion on when you're test-ready.
What do I need before I can start lessons?
You need a valid provisional driving license, which you can apply for online at gov.uk when you're 17 years old (16 for certain disability benefits). You must be able to read a number plate from 20 meters away, and you should inform us of any medical conditions that might affect your driving.
How do I book my practical driving test?
You can book your test online at gov.uk or by calling DVSA directly. You'll need your theory test pass certificate number, provisional license number, and a credit/debit card for payment. Tests typically need to be booked 6-8 weeks in advance. For intensive courses, we handle test booking for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
You can cancel or reschedule lessons with 24 hours notice for a full refund or credit. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are charged at 50% of the lesson cost. Same-day cancellations are charged at full cost unless due to illness or emergency circumstances.
Do you provide a car for the driving test?
Yes! All our packages include the option to use our test day vehicle for £40, or it's included free with intensive courses. This means you'll take your test in the same car you've been learning in, which significantly improves your chances of success.
What happens if I fail my driving test?
Don't worry - most people need more than one attempt! We'll review your test report with you, identify areas for improvement, and create a focused lesson plan to address any weaknesses. You can rebook your test immediately, though we recommend 1-3 additional lessons before attempting again.
Can I learn in an automatic car?
Absolutely! We offer both manual and automatic lessons. Learning in an automatic is often quicker and easier as you don't need to worry about clutch control or gear changes. The cost is slightly higher (£38/hour vs £35/hour) and your license will be automatic-only, but for many learners this is the perfect choice.
Do you offer discounts for block bookings?
Yes! We offer significant savings on block bookings. Book 10 hours and save £30, or book 20 hours and save £100. We also offer student discounts (10%), NHS worker discounts (10%), and early bird discounts for morning lessons (15%). These can't be combined with block booking discounts.
How long does the practical driving test take?
The practical test lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving in various road and traffic conditions, one reversing maneuver, and 20 minutes of independent driving following signs or a sat nav. You're allowed up to 15 driving faults (minors) to pass.
What is Pass Plus and should I take it?
Pass Plus is additional training covering motorways, night driving, and adverse weather conditions - situations not typically encountered during lessons or tests. It can make you a safer driver and many insurance companies offer discounts to Pass Plus holders. We recommend it for all newly qualified drivers, especially those under 25.
